Karaja rugs are usually known for their three large geometric medallions centrally located in the field of the rug that are similar to a Heriz. Issac’s detail, use of terra cotta red and navy blue, paired with a low pile really set him apart. He also sports and ‘abrash’ which is the red stripe you see in the center. An abrash is a term used to describe color variations in hand-knotted rugs especially made by nomadic tribes. Sometimes they are intentional and sometimes it’s just because the natural vegetable dye changed over the course of making the rug. If it was intentional, the idea was that man’s idea about imperfection was prone to error so it was a way to remind them they are perfectly imperfect. I’ve grown to love a good abrash.
